Green Mountain National Forest
Green Mountain Conservation Camps
The Green Mountain National Forest in western Vermont and the Finger Lakes National Forest in New York State's Finger Lakes region are Vermont's and New York's only public, federally managed national forests. Both Forests offer extensive multi-use advantages to the public, providing ecological and science-based forestry stewardship, clean water, diverse vegetation, high-value, high-quality forest products, economical and educational contributions, and trail-based back-country recreation.

The Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC), a program devised by Franklin Roosevelt during the Great Depression to provide work for unemployed young men, built and repaired roads and bridges, planted thousands of trees, fought forest fires, and participated in local town events. Nationally, they built the National Parks and Recreation areas. Locally, the facilities at Hapgood Pond, including the stone shelters, remain part of their legacy. A CCC camp existed in Weston in the 1930s and 40s and was located on the west side of Route 155 north of the junction with Route 100. In conjunction with the Weston Historical Society, the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation erected a state historical marker on the site.
